The South African Social Security Agency has warned beneficiaries of the spread of false information regarding social grant payments and the supposed new regulations. False claims like these- mainly circulating on social media-would panic and create confusion among recipients.
Clarification on Grant Payments
Previous rumour had it that SASSA shall be granting double payments in June 2025. The agency denied any such payment shall be made. According to Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA’s spokesperson, the only official increases had been implemented in April 2025 after the Finance Ministry had made a pronouncement thereon in March and another in October. Any other information concerning payments would thus be false.
Regarding Alleged New Rules
There are lies being spread about new rules affecting pensions starting from 10 June 2025. SASSA once again clarified that no such official announcement has been made. The agency did initiate a targeted verification process affecting the May 2025 payment cycle, which only applies to beneficiaries using alternative identification methods or those identified through means testing for undisclosed income.
The Need to Rely on Official Sources
SASSA is thus urging all its beneficiaries to rely entirely on information that is distributed via only its official outlets, including the certified social media pages or direct communication. Circulating unofficial information could result in widespread misinformation, which, in turn, could cause undue stress and confusion to these very vulnerable groups.
Conclusion
With all these fake news making the rounds about social grants, SASSA recommends that one should always verify all news by looking for official sources first. Beneficiaries should keep abreast and informed by regularly consulting SASSA’s official communication and stay away from spreading rumors that have not been verified, which could simply spark unnecessary worries.
